TRAINING + DEVELOPMENT

We Train Our Staff

Mechanical Building Services (MBS) Apprenticeship

Previously known as the HVAC Installer apprenticeship, the Mechanical Building Services (MBS) pathway focuses on the installation of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. Apprentices gain hands-on experience working with ducting, pipework, air distribution systems, and mechanical plant equipment. From here commissioning and some areas of fault finding are learned. Training emphasises reading plans, system layout, and installation to New Zealand standards, preparing apprentices for a specialist trade role within the HVAC industry.

Electrician Apprenticeship

The electrical apprenticeship equips learners with the skills to safely install, maintain, and repair electrical systems. From lighting and power to switchboards and automation systems, apprentices work under the guidance of licensed electricians on real job sites. They’ll learn how to interpret electrical drawings, ensure compliance with NZ regulations, and develop fault-finding and problem-solving skills needed to become a registered electrician. Fantail has so much variety of work that pathways for individuals can lead on into Commercial, Industrial, and Residential in either or all installation, fault finding, repairs and maintenance.

Refrigeration & Air-conditioning Service Engineer Apprenticeship

This apprenticeship develops the skills needed to service; fault find, repair and maintain commercial and industrial refrigeration systems. Apprentices work on chilled water systems, heat pumps, cool rooms freezer rooms, and other cooling and heating technologies using refrigeration. Critical environments such as offices, server rooms, groceries, and manufacturing heavily rely on good service engineers. The training includes diagnostics, maintenance procedures, refrigerant handling, and some installations in line with environmental and safety standards, with a focus on energy efficiency and sustainable practices.

Growth & Development – Pathway to Foreman and Supervisor (Site Leadership)

At Fantail Services, apprentices are not just learning a trade, they’re building a career. With experience and proven performance, team members can progress into a site leadership role, where they oversee job sites, coordinate teams, and ensure quality and safety standards are met. This leadership role is often the first step toward a long-term career in site and project management.

Growth & Development – Management Pathways

For those who show exceptional work ethic, initiative, leadership, and a strong understanding of the trade, opportunities exist to grow beyond the tools and site into Management roles. These positions involve project planning, team leadership, client liaison, and business development responsibilities. We look for the right fit being trustworthy, loyal, and exceptional with understanding the numbers, with verbal and written communication, with technology and software process. Fantail Services supports internal development through mentorship, training, and the chance to shape the future of the company from within.
